This is a question that get asked quite often and many people are surprised to find out there is only one required exit door in a single family home per the IRC. However, there are requirements this door must meet. It must be a side hinged door, a minimum size of 3 feet wide and 6 feet 8 inches tall. So that sliding door, NOPE it doesn't meet building code for an exit door. You can install them, but you must have at least one side hinged door to be code compliant. This width and height is a normal stock size exterior door. So there is nothing special about installing an exit door.

There are other egress requirements in your home including but not limited to egress window sizes. When all these requirements are used together, a safe exiting of a home is not faulted by only one exit door.
